Zerelda Brass is an American girl, who first met Darrell when Darrell's parents gave her a lift to Malory Towers in her first term. She is initially put into the fourth form, but, due to her low standard of work is moved down to the third form. This allows her friendship with Gwendoline to develop and Gwen encourages Zerelda in her belief that she is 'wunnerful' at acting. The showdown comes during a drama class when Zerelda is humiliated by the teacher and told that she cannot act. She decides that the best thing to be in life is, after all, an ordinary school girl and settles down towards the end of the term.
Appearance[]
According to Darrell's description, Zerelda has brass-like colored hair. She is 'tall and willowy' and she looks older than her age. She appears sophisticated. At the school her appearance causes a sensation and snobby Gwendoline immediately attaches herself to her. She wears a lot of makeup and leaves her hair open and poofy to look like the film star she admires, Lossie Laxton. The teachers often disapprove of the “silly roll” on the top of her hair that she wears very often. The roll of hair is said to make her look older and taller. She hates to wear her school hat and hates plaits. She normally came to class wearing lipstick and polished nails.
Personality[]
Zerelda is described as snobby, and with “her nose up in the air” She thinks that she is a very good actress and wants to be a film star, however, when she tries out for the part if Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, the play they are performing, she embarrassed herself by acting too dramatic and makes a fool out of herself. She then realizes that she is not meant to be an actress. Before, she would look down upon everyone else, and did not like those “plain English girls” She also is known for saying “wunnerful“ instead of wonderful, which the girls often ridicule her for. She normally says 'gee' in her American accent. Near the end of term she befriends Mavis, a girl who had a wonderful singing voice that she lost. But Zerelda was generous, so said when she brought a book, some fruit and sweets for Mavis. She thinks in the end of the term that she was very silly, trying to act like Lossie and ridiculing the English girls for their simplicity and their love for sports.
Relatives[]
Zerelda has a English mother, but apparently they settled down in America. Zerelda mentions that her mother was as American as ever, she didn't know what made her think that she was English. She also has an English grandmother who lived in England, and she (her grandmother) was a great friend of Mrs Rivers's mother, Darrell's gran. It was Darrell's granny who suggested that Darrell and Zerelda should go together to Malory Towers, thinking that it would be good for them to talk about the school together.
